Cloud and data center concept

People say “my photos are in the cloud.” That does not mean your files live inside actual clouds—it means a provider runs the computers for you, and you reach them over the internet.

One-sentence version

Cloud usually means: using services or storage on someone else’s systems over a network, paying for what you use instead of buying and running every server yourself.

The old opposite pattern is on‑premises: you own the machines in your own building and maintain them end to end. Both models still exist; many teams mix them.

A helpful analogy: tap water

You could own a well, pump, and filter for every single glass. Most people do not. They pay for what flows when they turn the tap and let the utility run the rest.

DIY (on‑prem)

High upfront cost, your team carries upgrades, spares, and security for every box.

Cloud

A provider offers capacity as a service: scale, backups, and updates become shared engineering that many customers pay for together.

Why the *cloud* icon?

On network drawings, the messy internet edge used to be sketched with a puffy cloud shape—standing for “something I connect to” without drawing every device inside. The nickname stuck in marketing, not meteorology.

Summary

  • Cloud = rent capacity and software over the network; pay—as—you—go in many products.
  • On−prem = you own the iron and the late−night pager rotation.
  • Gmail, mobile photo sync, and streaming video are familiar cloud−shaped user experiences.
